COLESEED OIL REPLACES GAS OIL: ROAD CONSTRUCTION CAN BE ENVIRONMENT- FRIENDLIER
KOOLZAADOLIE VERVANGT GASOLIE: WEGENBOUWEN KAN MILIEUVRIENDELIJKER
This article discusses the experiences gained in the Netherlands with the product Rapsody 1 as a substitute for gas oil in the application as anti adhesion agent and for the cleaning of asphalt spreaders, tools, and vehicles. The raw material for Rapsody 1 is coleseed oil, obtained from biologically raised coleseed. This makes the product biodegradable and it has a neutral pH value. Rapsody 1 was tested as anti adhesion agent and as cleansing agent, and the impact of the product on asphalt, man and environment was investigated. The Road and Hydraulic Engineering Division (DWW) of the Dutch Public Works Department (Rijkswaterstaat) was involved in the investigations. Soil samples were taken to assess possible contamination of the road verge. With regard to the conventional gas oil Rapsody 1 has two major advantages: 1) soil contamination is prevented; 2) the working conditions for the road workers are improved due to less odour nuisance and no skin irritation. The research results showed that the asphalt composition and the bitumen properties were not affected by the coleseed product.
