ASPHALT RENOVATION MERWEDE BRIDGE NEAR GORINCHEM: CONTINUOUSLY WORKING NIGHT AND DAY FOR TWO WEEKS

ASFALTVERNIEUWING MERWEDEBRUG BIJ GORINCHEM: TWEE WEKEN DAG EN NACHT CONTINU DOORWERKEN

This article describes the reconstruction activities carried out to renovate the asphalt layers on the steel Merwede bridge near Gorinchem in the Netherlands. The asphalt is renovated on the concrete first spans of the bridge, the steel arch bridges and the viaducts in the continuation of the bridge. First the following issues are briefly discussed: a) the contract; b) the tender; c) the specific activities carried out on the concrete first spans of the bridge. The requirements that have to be met by a new asphalt structure on a steel bridge deck are then discussed. To keep out weather influences as much as possible the renovation works are carried out under a special tent construction. The asphalt layers are spread on the steel bridge deck as follows: 1) an asphalt foil layer is put on the adhesion primer "parafor vernis"; 2) on this foil layer a layer of gussasphalt, which has been especially modified with the additive Evatane, is spread; 3) on this layer a second modified foil layer called "parafor solo" is put; 4) finally a top layer of porous asphaltic concrete, to which Evatane and bitumen Styr-Elf 1380 have been added to make and keep the mixture stable, is spread.
