STRONG STABILIZATION WITH RECYCLING IN SITU: FAVOURABLE EXPERIENCES IN PROVINCE OF GRONINGEN

STERKE STABILISATIE MET RECYCLING IN SITU: GUNSTIGE ERVARINGEN IN PROVINCIE GRONINGEN

This article describes the experiences gained in the Dutch province of Groningen with the cold in situ recycling method for the stabilization of existing flexible pavements in case of total rehabilitation. Using this method the existing pavement is milled in one operation together with the underlying roadbase material. At the same time the necessary amount of water, sand, and cement is added and mixed as homogeneously as possible. After regulating and compaction the first asphalt layer is put on within 24 hours. Before construction preliminary investigations were carried out into the composition and particle size distribution of the milled materials and into the amount of water, sand, cement, and, if necessary, mixed granules to be added. During construction the particle size distribution, the mix quality, and the degree of compaction were investigated. After construction a compressive strength test was carried out, and deflection measurements were carried out to assess the stiffness of the roadbase. From a cost comparison with other roadbase materials applied in pavement structures with the same service life it appears that the cold in situ recycling stabilization method leads to savings on the roadbase.
