WINTER MAINTENANCE BY MEANS OF SPRAYING ON THE IJSSEL BRIDGE NEAR WESTERVOORT

This article discusses the experiences gained with an automatic sprinkler which, activated by the ice warning system in operation, sprays a thawing agent on the bridge deck when winter slipperiness is expected. The sprinkler is located on the IJssel bridge near Westervoort in the Netherlands. The bridge consists of a steel and a concrete part. The steel bridge deck has a porous asphaltic concrete (pac) wearing course. The steel part and the part at the concrete/steel construction are considered as critical parts under winter conditions. Besides, the transitional area from pac to dense asphaltic concrete (dac) forms a danger zone, through the fact that the traffic coming from the pac part hardly regenerates and conveys any thawing agent to the dac part, whereas the thawing agent is removed from here by passing vehicles. The installation of the sprinkler, its operation, the activation by the ice warning system, and the choice of a 22% sodium chloride solution as thawing agent are discussed.
