DEMAND FOR CAR AND PUBLIC TRANSPORT JOURNEYS IN GOTHENBURG 1960-1988

EFTERFRAAGAN PAA BIL- OCH KOLLEKTIVRESOR I GOETEBORG 1960-1988

Development of public transport in Goeteborg between 1960 and 1988 can be divided into three periods, 1960-1972 when travel by public transport decreased by 25%, 1973-1983 when travel gradually increased, with travel in 1983 30% higher than in 1973, and in 1984-1988 when travel again markedly decreased, with a 12% drop compared with 1983. During the whole period, car traffic and thus car journeys steeply increased. Three main factors put forward as the cause are: 1) Rise in incomes, 2) Changes in residential pattern and workplace relocations; and 3) Growth in costs of time and travel. The demand models for car and public transport journeys were based on economic theory and took account of: a) state of health and socio-economic factors, b) climatic and geographical factors; and 3) generalised travel costs. The further one lives fron Goeteborg, the greater number of car journeys and the time thus saved. Rise in petrol prices had positive effect on public transport use, while rise in hourly wages and ticket prices had negative effect.
