DRIVERS' DECISION-MAKING AND SAFETY MARGINS IN CONNECTION WITH BRAKING AND CROSSING

BILFOERARES BESLUTSFATTANDE OCH SAEKERHETSMARGINALER I SAMBAND MED INBROMSNING OCH KORSNINGSBETEENDE

In the present report, initially the importance of safety margins for driver performance is discussed according to control theory. Safety margins are assumed to ease driver's decision making. Instead of a continous process of decision-making, the driver controls his vehicle with reference to a constant safety margin value. In the first experiment drivers' decisons to begin braking are studied . The purpose of the study is to measure drivers' subjective margins of safety, to explore which information is used and to describe the rule used in the control of braking. In a second study driver behavior in crossings, where they are entering a main road, is studied.
