INTEGRATION OF TRAFFIC REGULATIONS IN A DIGITAL DATABASE IN JAPAN
In Japan, the main current type of in-vehicle traffic information supply systems with graphic display is a navigation type, showing driving routes. The number of car-mounted static navigation units has already reached 300,000. Keeping pace with progress in ATIS (Advanced Traffic Information Service and VICS (Vehicle Information & Communication System activities, more expectations are held for proceeding to the dynamic navigation era, based on real-time traffic information. In order to make this sophisticated system successful, digital driving regulations data are indispensable. (In this paper, Traffic Regulations mean maneuver-restrictions, such as left-turn prohibition, U-turn prohibition, etc., on roads).
