MECHANICAL ISOLATION TOOL FOR ESD VALVE SERVICING UNDER DEVELOPMENT

Mobil North Sea Ltd., Aberdeen, is developing a remotely controlled, mechanical isolation tool for use in servicing emergency shutdown (ESD) valves, such as those required for all pipelines operating the U.K. North Sea. Although all ESD valves are relatively new, their maintenance is a concern to operators. This article describes the the use of a freeze plug to isolate an ESD valve for emergency repairs in 1993, evaluates the freeze-plug performance, and points out the disadvantages of a freeze-plug isolation. The mechanical isolation tool is then evaluated, pointing out its advantages when compared to the freeze plug. The operation of the mechanical isolation tool is described, followed by a discussion of the conversion of the tool to remote control.
