RURAL ATIS: ASSESSMENT OF USER NEEDS AND TECHNOLOGIES

Relatively little attention has been focused on the integration of ATIS elements in rural and small urban areas. Recognizing that ATIS investments may offer substantial potential benefits in rural areas, the U.S. Federal Highway Administration initiated a project to address travelers' needs in rural and small urban areas. This paper discusses the rural environment and presents preliminary findings of two key components of the project: a user needs assessment and a state of the art technology review. User needs were assessed through focus group discussions, telephone interviews, and consultations with agencies engaged in collecting, coordinating, and disseminating information to travelers in rural and small urban areas. Summary findings of the technology review activities are presented for each of the data collection, data aggregation/processing, communications, and traveler interface functions of rural ATIS.
