RECREATIONAL APPLICATIONS OF IVHS IN NEW JERSEY
A series of programs have been proposed to the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) which utilize Intelligent Vehicle-Highway Systems (IVHS) technology to improve traffic flow along the major recreational corridors in southern New Jersey. These programs use portable Variable Message Signs (VMS) and Highway Advisory Radio (HAR) equipment, cellular call-in systems, and an incident management plan on a part-time basis. Addressing shorebound recreational travel congestion is just one aspect of a larger statewide IVHS master planning effort currently underway. This paper discusses the background, goals and objectives, operational concepts, and institutional issues and potential barriers to the implementation of IVHS technologies along three major recreational roadway corridors which provide access to the Jersey Shore.
