RURAL IVHS OUTREACH: STIMULATING LOCAL AGENCY INTEREST AND INVOLVEMENT

In an effort to understand and respond to the resistance to IVHS by rural decision-makers and transportation specialists, the authors have initiated a broad campaign to formulate a realistic strategy that encourages thinking toward IVHS approaches to address transportation needs in rural areas. The development of Rural IVHS Outreach Guidelines and associated informational materials is intended to support the Public Outreach and Education process developed by the IVHS AMERICA Task Force and provide a plan of action for the Rural Outreach Subcommittee of the Advanced Rural Transportation Systems Committee. This paper outlines and reports on the development of the Rural IVHS Outreach Program Plan, the preliminary findings from the scoping process, and the anticipated production of Rural Outreach Guidelines and informational materials.
