THE EUROPEAN APPROACH TO STANDARDS FOR ROAD TRANSPORT AND TRAFFIC TELEMATICS

In Europe, standardization for road transport and traffic telematics (RTTT) is the responsibility of the European Standards Organization's Technical Committee 278 (CEN/TC 278). This committee receives much technical input from the DRIVE research and development program, which demonstrates the technical feasibility of the standards recommended by TC 278. The standardization process for one of TC 278's top priorities, automatic fee collection, is discussed. Two interfaces require special attention in this area. The first is the relationship between the financial and the transport sectors, which is necessary for a pan-European integrated payment system. The second is Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC), which provide a good example of the way RTTT standardization is performed within Europe.
