This survey of bicycle helmet wearing is the latest in a series of surveys conducted in Victoria. Helmet wearing rates in the provincial towns were higher than in Melbourne at all types of schools and at recreational sites. Helmet wearing rates were the highest at the adult commuter sites where rates close to 90% were recorded. All cyclist groups, except secondaryschool cyclists in Melbourne (61.4%), recorded rates exceeding 80%. The helmet wearing rate was higher in 1994 than in 1991 at government and non-government secondary schools in both Melbourne and provincial towns. Primary school students in Melbourne comprised the only group of cyclists to show an appreciable decrease in bicycle helmet wearing rates, but the wearing rate for this group was already very high dropping from 92.2% in 1991 to 82.7% in 1994. There were fewer cyclists observed in all areas of provincial towns in 1994 compared with 1991. (A)
