A TEST FRAME FOR MODEL PAVEMENT LOADING

The loading frame, described in this paper, has been constructed for testing pavement performance on a laboratory model scale. Wheel loading is simulated by a pulsated vertical force applied to the surface of the model by a pneumatically actuated loading head. Since triangular-shaped force pulses of up to 50kn can be repeated in a contact area of 300mm diameter once every three seconds, the results obtained in a relatively short time permit a more accurate check of the applicability of deterministic, mathematical models to pavement design.
