RAINFALL INPUTS FOR SIMULATION OF DESIGN FLOODS IN KANSAS. FINAL REPORT

The objective of this research was to develop and evaluate a procedure for determining appropriate rainfall and soil-moisture inputs for simulation of floods on Kansas streams. The study had three major parts: (1) An analysis of detailed rainfall and streamflow data for 12 small watersheds; (2) A statistical analysis of key characteristics of storms that produce heavy rainfall; and (3) A test of various design-storm models using single-event and continuous storm event simulation. The need for and sources of historical rainfall data and rainfall frequency data are discussed. The recommended design-storm model for watersheds of 10 sq mi (25.9 sq km) or less is the Modified Uniform Storm Model.
