CHILD RESTRAINT SYSTEMS. CONTINUED TESTING OF THE HANDLING PERFORMANCE OF BUCKLES ON CHILD SEATS

SKYDDSSYSTEM FOER BARN I BILAR. FORTSATT PROEVNING AV HANTERBARHETEN HOS LAAS PAA BARNBILSTOLAR

A series of psychological and technical studies of child seats for cars has been carried out at the institute. This is the second report of handling performance of buckles and harnesses. Two experiments are reported. The first deals with the potentially dangerous capacity for children to open various, not previously studied, buckles on child seats. 24 children one and a half years to six years of age performed the test. The second experiment deals with the difficulties adults may have in removing children from different types of child seats under simulated conditions of darkness, which involved the specific testing of the new buckles on the seats. A child dummy was used in this second study. The data of these two experiments show that four of the six new buckles are easy to open for adults but difficult for children. These buckles are judged to be much better and easier to handle than the buckles of today. /TRRL/
