THE ROUTE AHEAD. VEHICLE POLLUTION: CAUSES, EFFECTS, ANSWERS?

Concern about the emissions of nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide from vehicles, coupled with new forecasts of ever increasing growth in the use of road transport, led the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) to commission Earth Resources Research to prepare a detailed computer model of future trends of emissions of these pollutants from transport in the United Kingdom. The analysis, using the computer model, looks at the main gaseous pollutants from the different road users and projects emission levels to the year 2020. The model takes into account the forthcoming introduction of three-way catalytic converters and assesses their effectiveness and limitations. Finally it predicts the potential impact on future emission levels of the introduction of highly fuel efficient vehicles and changes in transport policies. (A)
