EVALUATION OF THE TRAFFIC EDUCATION PROJECT FOR 16-18 YEAR-OLDS IN THE DUTCH PROVINCE OF ZEELAND

EVALUATIE VERKEERSEDUCATIEPROJECT VOOR 16 T/M-18 JARIGEN IN DE PROVINCIE ZEELAND

This paper presents the results of an evaluation study into a traffic education project for 16-18 year-olds in the Dutch province of Zeeland. This project was started by the Regional Road Safety Council of Zeeland in the autumn of 1990. The course is evaluated by using a written questionnaire. The majority of the respondents that had participated in the course had followed almost all lessons. Almost all students had made use of the possibility of doing the theoretical part of the driver training. Two thirds of the participants passed the theoretical part, which is higher than the national average. On average, the course is evaluated positively by the respondents. The parts of the course that clearly prepare to the theoretical part of the driver training were evaluated most positively. It is recommended that in the future: (1) more attention should be paid to an extensive explanation of the course's subject matter, and (2) practical examples have to be used that concern mainly young people. Additionally, information about the course should be provided in such a way that no false expectations among the students will be aroused.
