PROVISIONAL RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE PREVENTION OF DAMAGE BY THE ALKALI-AGGREGATE REACTION

Although few cases are reported in France, they are sufficiently important to justify the taking of precautions. The principles of a preventative approach are discussed. The level of prevention necessary is determined from the characterisation of the structure and its environment. Three levels of prevention are proposed, depending upon the function of the structure being considered. The recommendations define the lack of prevention to be attained for different types of structures and environmental conditions. Corresponding checks which should be made are specified, either in the form of an analytical approach, the use of performance criteria, or a reference of use approach used in a regional context. Criteria are given to ensure the non-reactivity of aggregates using physio- chemical, mineralogical, or petrochemical analysis, chemical tests or dimensional stability in an alkali-enriched medium. Further background information and special precautions are given for structures exposed to frost and de-icing salts.
