EUROPE ON THE MOVE: RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN EUROPEAN COMMUNICATIONS AND TRANSPORT ACTIVITY RESEARCH. CHAPTER 4. A BILLION TRIPS A DAY: MOBILITY PATTERNS OF EUROPEANS

This chapter considers European travel patterns and how they might evolve in the future, comparing in particular: a) Europe with other parts of the world and, b) the situation in different European countries. Statistics concerning aspects of car ownership and mobility are presented for Japan, the US, OECD Europe and Eastern Europe. Differences are discussed. Statistics from individual European countries are then examined. These figures are considered from the point of view of age, gender, level of education, income, residential location, geographical patterns of travel, transport policies and transport prices. A convergence is anticipated in mobility behaviour among Europeans. Traffic growth is expected to be curbed by a number of measures. For the covering abstract see IRRD 863675.
