EUROPE ON THE MOVE: RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN EUROPEAN COMMUNICATIONS AND TRANSPORT ACTIVITY RESEARCH. CHAPTER 2. EUROPE 2020: LONG-TERM SCENARIOS OF TRANSPORT AND COMMUNICATIONS IN EUROPE

This paper discusses issues that will affect the future of transport and communications in Europe. It is based on a study carried out for the European Science Foundation to identify relevant fields for research. Socioeconomic trends in the fields of: a) population, b) lifestyle, c) economy, d) environment, e) regional development, f) urban and rural form, g) goods transport, h) passenger transport and i) communications are examined. Technological trends in transport and communications are outlined. The development of alternative scenarios for the 9 fields examined is then described. Three scenarios representing different policy directions, 1) growth scenario, 2) equity scenario and 3) environment scenario were designed. A questionnaire was used to assess the preferred and likely outcomes. Two options of growth and no growth are identified and discussed. For the covering abstract see IRRD 863675.
