EMC OF ROAD VEHICLES FOR EUROPE
The EC type-approval process for road vehicles has been established for over 20 years. Detailed technical requirements are set out in Directives and type approval for a vehicle can be granted only after those precise requirements have been met. The European automotive industry has submitted a proposal to the European Commission that will exempt automotive electronics from the scope of EMC Directive 89/336/EEC. This product-specific Directive will bring automotive EMC back into the established vehicle process but this is unlikely to be ready before approval to 89/336 is required. Vehicle manufacturers must be prepared to deal with both. This paper explores the potential for a common approach and details the technical requirements to be met by the automotive industry.
