BRIDGE DESIGN AND EQUIPMENT AIMS TO MEET REDUCED MANNING REQUIREMENTS

Reduced manning has created a need to devise electronic systems for making navigating decisions easier. Some of the ergonomic considerations that should influence bridge design for ships with small crews are noted, including the impact of the workstation concept. Descriptions are then given of integrated bridge systems available from various manufacturers: Krupp Atlas Elektronik, Sperry, Selesmar, JRC/Raytheon, and Racal.
