TRENDS AND INNOVATIONS IN MARINE FIRE SYSTEMS

The trend in the marine industry has been toward requiring approvals from several different agencies for multiservice vessels and their fire safety systems. The process of obtaining these approvals can delay the completion and handing over of a vessel. One way to ease the problem, as explained in this article, is to let the fire systems as a ship protection package to a vendor with the expertise and capability to deal directly with the shipyard and the authorities. Trouble-free fire system contracts are also related to reliability, especially as regards halon systems. The development of the "blower" door is described as potentially enabling the leak- testing of such systems without the actual release of halon gas.
