The traditional method of distributing heat has been by steam, which normally requires supervision and maintenance. With crew numbers falling and machinery spaces becoming automated, thermal fluids have proven to be an ideal alternative medium for heat transfer. These fluids are most often used for cargo heating, sea water heating for tank washing, fuel oil heating, engine oil heating, hotel and accommodation heating, line tracing and cargo pump heating. The way the fluids work is explained and their advantages are listed.
