THE EVOLUTION OF LUBRICATION FOR MARINE PROPULSION SYSTEMS

The evolution of lubrication and lubricants for marine propulson plants over a period of 200 years is traced. An account is given of the birth of the modern petroleum industry and of the effect this had on the lubricants used at sea. The development of lubricants for steam reciprocating steam turbine and diesel machinery is discussed, taking account of the change in the operating parameters for these various systems.
