ODEN--ICEBREAKER TECHNOLOGY FOR THE YEAR 2000

ODEN is an "ultra modern" icebreaker designed, in cooperation with GVA Technology AB of Gothenburg, Sweden, and Canadian Marine Drilling Ltd. of Calgary, to last far into the 21st century. The icebreaker is operated by the Swedish National Maritime Administration, which was deeply involved in the development of the conceptual, as well as the detailed, design. ODEN is designed for worldwide operation in ice-infested waters and incorporates a number of novel features for efficient icebreaking and good maneuverability. The diesel mechanical propulsion system puts and end to a 56-year period of diesel electric propulsion on Baltic icebreakers. The important technical features are presented together with some of the full-scale trial results. An economic comparison with another large Baltic icebreaker is made.
