ANALYSIS OF DEEP EXCAVATION IN BOSTON. DISCUSSION AND CLOSURE

A discussion of a paper with the aforementioned title by Whittle, Hashash, and Whitman, published in this journal (Volume 119, Number 1, January 1993), is presented. The discussion focuses on the use of finite element analysis in predicting the wall movements of deep excavations in Boston, Massachusetts. The authors believe these analyses provide reliable and consistent predictions. Koutsoftas draws attention to some of the most significant limitations of finite element analyses and urges caution and good judgment in applying the results of such analyses to design. Discussion is followed by closure from the authors.
