THE KEY IS CONSTRUCTABILITY
The New York Department of Transportation (DOT) terminated a contract to build the Oak Point Link after encountering problems in the construction of the foundations. The Oak Point Link is a 2.9-km (1.8 m) trestle along the shoreline of the Harlem River in the South Bronx, which to complete, requires constructing foundations in a tidal waterway and crossing over three subway tunnels and under five major bridges. This article describes how the New York DOT got back on track with the project and how the original and new designs differ. In addition, caisson construction is discussed as well as the management of the project. Constructability reviews led to the restart of the Oak Point Link, and partnering in management will lead to its completion in 1995.
