DEEP DIG, TIGHT SQUEEZE

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority recently awarded contracts for the North Station Transportation Improvement Project. The project consists of shoehorning a commuter rail terminal, a subway line, a 1,200-space parking garage, and a new sports arena into a 3-acre parcel in downtown Boston. This article describes the project in detail, including the design-construction challenges and the construction management plan. Detailed discussions regarding caissons and columns, and subsequent excavation and slab construction is provided. To date, construction on the parking garage and expanded commuter rail tunnel have been completed. The sports arena is scheduled for completion in October 1995 in time for Celtics basketball and Bruins hockey.
