As is the case with any local government, there are many misconceptions about the role of parking enforcement in the city of Santa Fe. Much of this stems from a misunderstanding of the role of parking enforcement and its importance in maintaining a high quality of life for city residents and visitors. Yet public attention frequently focuses solely on the negative or punitive aspects of enforcement. In Santa Fe, however, as elsewhere, the heart of the parking enforcement program is to ensure compliance with the city's Uniform Traffic Ordinance. The primary objectives of enforcement are: 1) encourage compliance of parking regulations; 2) promote traffic and pedestrian safety; 3) maximize on-street parking through increased turnover; 4) protect access needed for commerce and public convenience; and 5) keep residential areas free of downtown commuters and visitor parkers. In order to accomplish these objectives, an increased awareness and support of enforcement objectives on the part of both government officials and the general public is required.
