In the last few years, society's concerns about air pollution have been codified by local, state and federal government entities into stricter regulation of its sources. A great deal of attention has been focused on Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). However, while much has been written about the subject, most of it is very technical, geared toward an audience versed in chemistry and formulation. For coatings applicators and owners who want to know about basic issues, many details in this literature are unnecessary. This article reviews what VOCs are, why they are a concern, what can be done to keep their levels in applications as low as possible and how their levels in a product are determined.
