I-17 JOINT SEALANT PERFORMANCE EVALUATION
The Arizona Transportation Research Center coordinated the installation of a test section in July 1986 in the Arizona high country near Flagstaff under a joint resealing project. The test site was 0.7 mile long consisting of 200 transverse joints sawed 2 in. deep, skewed 1:6, and spaced in a repeating sequence of 17, 15, 13, and 15 ft. The project was located on the southbound lanes of Interstate 17. The average low temperature in the Flagstaff area is 15 deg F during January while the average high temperature is 80 deg F in July. The average annual rainfall in Flagstaff is 19 in. This Research Note presents the study findings. After eight years of service, asphalt based hot pour sealants and silicone sealants performed comparably on the test site in Flagstaff.
