SHRP DEFORMATION TEST - THE KEY COMPONENT
The primary objectives of Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) Project A-003A included development of a series of accelerated performance-related tests for asphalt-aggregate mixes together with methods for analyzing asphalt-aggregate interactions which significantly affect pavement performance. For permanent-deformation evaluation, test methods which have been developed utilize the simple shear test. Testing can be done at two different levels with this equipment. At one level, the test program uses a suite of tests to permit an estimate of rutting to be made in a specific environment for an estimated level of traffic. This paper presents a brief description of the simple shear test equipment and its use in both levels of analysis summarized. In addition, the use of the simple shear test equipment to define a shear stiffness which can be used, in turn, to define mix fatigue response for mixes containing conventional asphalts is described.
