AN ASSESSMENT OF ROAD SAFETY TEACHING IN FRENCH SCHOOLS
In France, road safety teaching is compulsory in schools. A few years ago, teachers received guidelines to provide it in a new way, where coping with traffic is regarded as the main objective. The aim of this paper is to display the results of a survey done in a French district to assess the number of schools teaching traffic safety, and the training objectives carried out by the teachers. Methods used include both mailed questionnaires and indirect interviews with teachers. From the results, teacher interest is higher than expected (75 percent survey return). But teachers still have a conservative view of their work and their training objectives.
