SOME SPECIAL FEATURES OF TRAFFIC SAFETY SITUATION IN INDIA

India embarked on planned multi-sectoral development in 1951 when the first Five-Year Plan was launched. Major changes have taken place from the point of road traffic safety as a result of the all-around socio-economic development during the intervening four decades. The situation is marked by high accident and fatality rates. Discussed in this paper is the traffic safety scene in India with its peculiarities and trends. This is done in the context of the country as a whole as well as for the metropolitan cities. The salient aspects are analyzed and discussed from the point of measures for improvement.
