PSEUDOSTATIC SEISMIC STABILITY OF SLOPES: DESIGN CHARTS

The authors of this technical paper modify a variational limiting equilibrium method to include a pseudostatic seismic force to assess the stability of simple slopes. The minimum factor of safety is determined via the mathematical computation of the normal stress distribution over the potential slip surface. The equation describing this distribution contains terms related to seismicity and makes the problem statically determinate without a priori statical assumptions. A closed-form solution is obtained and a parametric study of the effects of pseudostatic seismic force is conducted easily. In addition, design charts for assessing the seismic stability of simple slopes are presented.
