ESTIMATION OF DAMPING RATIO OF CABLE-STAYED BRIDGES FOR SEISMIC DESIGN. DISCUSSION AND CLOSURE
A discussion of a paper with the aforementioned title by Kawashima, Unjoh, and Tsunomoto, published in this journal (Volume 119, Number 4, April 1993), is presented. The discussion focuses on energy dissipation in cables and the importance of precisely evaluating energy dissipation for each substructure of cable-stayed bridges. Raoof remarks that the damping ratio of the overall bridge system is underestimated, based on the use of piano wires to model the cables in the prototype bridge. Discussion is followed by closure from the authors.
