The purpose of this paper is to present a model for laterally loaded piles based on the analysis of elastic continuum. A numerical approach for the static analysis of pile and soil system is introduced, using variational calculus to obtain the governing differential equations of the soil and pile system. A principal parameter is used in this model to present the elastic foundation and an iterative technique is adopted to obtain a consistent energy solution. A number of features, such as linear relationships between the coefficients and simple analytical equations, are presented also. Calculations suggest improved predictive capability using the new method, which allows further improvement and simplification of the proposed model. A practical application guide has been produced for design engineers.
