A brief description is given of the two satellite messaging systems, Inmarsat and Euteltracs, that provide two-way communication between trucks and their operating bases. Inmarsat is a global system while Euteltracs covers Europe and some adjoining countries. The systems operate by feeding information to an on-board computer, are able to track vehicles to within 50 m, and can overcome problems such as mountains that can defeat land-based telephone systems. The opinions of a number of truck-operating companies concerning the advantages of using such systems are included.
