MIDLANDS LINKS MOTORWAY VIADUCTS REHABILITATION OF A FIRE DAMAGED STRUCTURE

The fire which resulted from an accident involving a fully laden petrol tanker caused severe damage to a structure forming part of Birmingham's motorway network. The intense heat caused extensive spalling which affected structural integrity. As a consequence of the accident, one of the main radial routes serving the city had to be closed. Work began immediately after the accident with the aim of restoring normal traffic movements in the shortest possible time commensurate with the costs involved. However, it was apparent from the outset that there was no obvious course of action that would ensure that these objectives were realized. This paper describes the investigations carried out to ascertain the extent of the damage and the parallel studies implemented to allow the appropriate decisions to be made on the rehabilitation of the structure. It also details the system that was developed to appraise the various options in order to arrive at the optimum solution. Details of the refurbishment work and an overview of the project are also provided. (A)
