THE CHALLENGE OF SUBSEA TUNNELLING

This paper introduces the concept of subsea tunnels, and reviews Norway's experience with such tunnels. Some early tunnels in Norway involved intakes to reservoirs consisting of submerged bottom piercings, or "lake taps". Since the introduction of this method in 1905, more than 500 lake taps have been performed in Norway. The author also discusses the developments that have contributed to the increasing use of subsea tunnels, and mentions several future tunnels planned in Norway. (A)
