IMPACT TOLERANCE AND RESPONSE OF THE HUMAN THORAX

The purpose of this paper is to present the results and findings from a continuing experimental program regarding the effects of blunt impact to the anterior human chest. Findings in terms of both injury tolerances and mechanical response of the thorax as a structural system are presented. Tolerance data have application to the intelligent design of crashworthy environments, and response data to the continued evolution of high-fidelity human surrogates - both mechanical and mathematical.
