SUSTAINABLE URBAN DEVELOPMENT: INDUSTRIAL SITING IN LAE, PAPUA NEW GUINEA

Environmental sustainability has become a major concern in developed and developing countries alike. This paper examines environmental problems arising from industrial location in Lae city, Papua New Guinea. Special reference is given to the location of a clinker grinding and cement packaging factory. The paper's main premise is that environmental impact assessment (EIA) should be the basis of sustainable development planning. The paper also identifies ways to avoid environmental disasters by increasing public awareness and participation, and through tougher legislative measures for environmental planning and monitoring.
