TRANSPORT AND THE ENVIRONMENT: FACTS AND FIGURES
This paper summarises the effect worldwide of transport on the environment including energy use, emissions and disposal. Statistics are presented for: a) passenger and freight trends in OECD countries, b) urban transport by mode in industrialised countries, c) trends in car densities in different regions of the world, d) the environmental effects of water, road, rail and air transport, e) increases in world consumption of petrol, f) a comparison of energy consumption between modes, g) increasing vehicle efficiency, h) reductions in the use of leaded petrol, i) nitrogen dioxide levels in selected cities and j) selected countries' emission limits. The problem of used vehicles and tyres is noted. Finally the use of alternative fuels is considered and a table presented comparing their advantages and disadvantages.
