AUSTRALIAN INVOLVEMENT IN THE US STRATEGIC HIGHWAY RESEARCH PROGRAM: FINAL SUMMARY REPORT

This summary report is a reference document on SHRP. It provides an overview of SHRP (its products, reports and Australia's involvement). It also lists implementable SHRP products in Australia, and outlines the benefits which Australia will obtain from its involvement in the project. It also provides contact details for following up particular reports and products. The major products from SHRP are: a new and sophisticated asphalt mix design system, SUPERPAVE; improved techniques for condition diagnosis; protection of and selection of materials for concrete and structures; a number of new tools and studies on pavement maintenance effectiveness; new and improved work zone safety devices; and test methods and guides for measuring pavement performance. SHRP has also established a large database of pavement performance data. In all, SHRP produced 300 technical reports and 140 products. Australia has already gained $9 million in benefits in saved research effort and an estimated $20 million annual benefits will be obtained in the long term from improved pavement performance.
