REPEATABILITY AND REPRODUCIBILITY OF VISCOSITY DETERMINATIONS BY SAAL VISCOMETER AND HAAKE VISCOBALANCE

The project's objectives were to: (1) obtain precision estimates for the Saal and Haake viscosity test procedures including estimates of repeatability and reproducibility as defined in both AS 2341.1 and ISO 5725; (2) Examine the sensitivity of the test procedures by performing a statistical 'ruggedness' test and provide recommendations for procedure improvements if warranted; (3) To introduce the general concepts and techniques of ruggedness analysis to the Materials Services Section; (4) To compare the Saal and Haake viscosity test procedures, investigating whether the results from the two procedures are generally comparable. The report makes recommendations on criteria to follow in judging the acceptability of Saal and Haake results. Following the ruggedness experiment there is strong evidence to suggest that, on average, measurements of viscosity are affected by the length of heating time for sample. Especially so for Saal. The results for reproducibility (for both Saal and Haake) should be considered tentative as the results are based on a comparison with the precision estimates of Australian Standard methods. (a)
