PAVEMENTS WITH STABILIZED CLAY SOIL AND ASPHALT TOP LAYERS: DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION AND TESTING

VERHARDINGEN VAN GESTABILISEERDE KLEIGROND MET ASFALTDEKLAGEN: ONTWERP, UITVOERING EN BEPROEVING

The Dutch DLO Institute of Agricultural Engineering (IMAG-DLO) has carried out two field experiments in which clay soil was stabilized with cement and the additive Geosta to serve as a bound roadbase for a parcel road and a pavement in a silage storage in the Netherlands. In both objects the stabilized soils, with a 0.25 m depth, were covered with asphalt top layers. The investigations focussed on the determination of the contribution to the bearing capacity of the roadbases by the Geosta additive. Design and construction aspects for both the stabilized soils and the asphalt wearing courses are discussed. Results of measurements carried out during the preparation, construction and service stages are discussed. In the laboratory no positive contribution to the seven days compressive strength of clay/cement soil samples as a result of the Geosta additive could be assessed. The compressive strength of samples in situ showed no improvement caused by Geosta either. Nevertheless, the pavements performed well during a three years service as regards passability and evenness.
