THE SWEDISH BOARD OF TRANSPORT'S MODEL SYSTEM FOR PERSONAL TRANSPORT

TRANSPORTRAADETS MODELLSYSTEM FOER PERSONTRANSPORTER

Every year considerable investments are made in transport system, and it is therefore necessary to be able to base one's decisions on reliable and firm foundations. The Board of Transport has therefore developed a complete model system for personal transport. The object has been to create a complete analytical instrument with which to analyze the personal transport sector, as well as to make forecasts of future traffic developments. The completed model system consists mainly of models for local/regional travel (< 100 km) models for interregional travel (> 100 km) and models relating to car ownership. The models decribing travel include models relating to travel generation, choice of destination and choice of transport means. All models are of the logit type. The model sytem also includes separate model for shorter and longer journeys connected with different objectives. The choice of transport means is described with the help of a number of traffic system variables such as costs, travel time, waiting time and distance from station/stop. For longer journeys the choice is between car, train, aeroplan and bus, whereas the choice for the shorter journeys is between private car, public transport and other tranport means. For the short journeys, calculations are made on an urban level - 1820 - and are completed by calculations for one rural area per local authority. The calculations for the longer journeys are made on the basis of 500 starting - points and destinations respectively. (A)
