TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT OF MACHINES AND EQUIPMENT FOR ROAD CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE

TEKNISK UTVECKLING INNENFOR VEGARBEIDSDRIFTEN

The purpose of this report is to establish a basis for discussion among people engaged in road construction and maintenance about future needs in machine development. In addition, the intention is to give some signals to the producers of road machinery to guide their future development. Increased demands on efficiency, safety and environmental considerations are met by research and development activities. Several development projects carried out during the last years, such as a new machine for road marking, sign washing, deicing and tunneling, are now in use. The directives given from the Norwegian 4-years road and traffic planning system constitute the most important document describing the future challanges for the Norwegian road system. The efforts should be directed towards areas important to reach the primary goals set up by The Norwegian Road and Traffic Plan: Service level, safety, environment and public service. These areas comprise urban areas, major national roads and county roads. In addition, the document focuses on competition between private contractors and public activity. The future trends of the development within society, technology, environment, transportation and road construction and maintenance are discussed. The development within these areas will influence the need for development of new road machinery. The educational level of the machine operators will rise. Development in information technology will improve the control-systems of the machinery. New materials will be used in machine construction. The influence of safety and environmental considerations will be stronger, and the use of recycling will grow. In transportation the focus will be on the needs of the road users and on the transportation costs. In construction and maintenance of roads this will lead to higher cost if not counteracted with the development of more efficient methods and equipment. Competition between private industry and public departments will increase. Specific development needs are identified within the following areas: 1) Increase in allowable axle loads; 2) Maintenance and rehabilitation of road surfacings; 3) Maintenance of signs, markings, railguards, etc; 4) Snow clearing and deicing; 5) Work zone safety; 6) Tunneling and maintenance of tunnels. Within the mentioned areas, the need for development of methods and equipment is specified.
